Secondary Plus course: English skills for success

Our Secondary Plus course gives teenagers the skills to feel confident communicating in English. They will be ready to go out into the world, seize new opportunities, and achieve their dreams.

This course is led by qualified English-teaching experts who offer a fantastic learning experience. Secondary Plus will enable your teen to reach their full potential.

  • Duration: 20 weeks (60 hours) 
  • Age: 13–17 years

Build skills and confidence in English

Teenagers can be themselves in our inclusive learning environment. Our English courses in Taiwan encourage them to: 

  • learn English as a second language and become assertive, independent and culturally aware global citizens
  • express their opinions openly, helping them to gain confidence in speaking English 
  • work on practical and challenging tasks that encourage self-expression and creative thinking  
  • collaborate in team tasks alongside classmates with a similar language level and age.

What parents need to know 

How is the course delivered? 

Expert teachers guide and support each student and use modern learning methods. Our goal is to get students ready to use English in the real world, in university and at the workplace.

Learners in our English language classes for teens:

  • participate in engaging, interactive activities
  • enjoy stimulating English conversation and speaking classes 
  • develop English language skills with guidance from a qualified English teacher.

What are the learning principles? 

During the course, your teen will: 

  • practise the skills they need for success in school exams and for study at local and international universities
  • build teamwork and leadership skills by working collaboratively with classmates
  • develop their creativity and connect with learners from other cultures.

How is progress assessed? 

At the British Council, we listen to your feedback. We provide regular feedback on your teen’s progress in learning English, along with certificates of attendance and reports on their academic progress and language skills. 

  • Formal and informal assessments are part of the course programme. 
  • Personalised online dashboards help you track progress together with your teen. 
  • We update you on the magazines and the projects that your teen has studied
  • You get a graph showing you their progress throughout the assessed period 
  • You get an assessment of the project part of their course based on international CEFR standards. The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is a system that shows how well people know a language.

How can parent’s interactive with us? 

During the year we offer opportunities to interactive with our teachers and follow your teen’s learning progress. These include: 

  • Parent briefings where your teen’s teacher will introduce themselves and give an overview of the year and what will be taught. 
  • Parent workshopswhere we will invite you to join sessions run by our academic management team discussing how you can help you teen’s learning inside and outside of the classroom. 
  • Invite a parent event where you will be invited to join one of your teen’s classes to see how we teach first hand. 

How the Learning Hub supports your teen’s progress

The British Council’s learning hub is a secure online platform. It helps your teen study English independently and at their own pace, before and after class. This means class time can focus on improving their English-speaking and practical skills. Teens can also do extra activities on the learning hub, guided by their teacher. Parents can also use the hub to check on their child’s progress. Find out more in our Parents centre (scroll down).

Be yourself and build confidence in an inclusive learning environment 

Our inclusive classes provide a space for your teen to be themselves: 

  • they will be in a class with other students who are a similar age to you, and who have the same language level 
  • their teacher will give them plenty of opportunities to express their opinions openly, helping them  gain confidence in speaking English 
  • we put their well-being first and have robust measures in place to ensure they are kept safe.

The British Council learning hub can be accessed using a phone, desktop computer, laptop or tablet. 

Learners can also download the learning hub app so they can get access on their own personal device.
