The British Council is the United Kingdom's international cultural relations organisation founded in 1934. We have offices in 229 towns and cities in 110 countries and territories worldwide, and we have been working in Taiwan since 1996.
1934
“British Committee for Relations with Other Countries” was established. The word “Committee” was replaced with “Council” in the same year.
1936
Foreign and Commonwealth Office abbreviated the title to “The British Council”
1996
The British Council in Taiwan was established and operated as the Education and Cultural Section in the British Trade and Cultural Office.
1999
The British Council started IELTS and other exams services in Taiwan.
2001
The British Council in Taiwan started to operate under the title of British Council, British Trade and Cultural Office.
The British Council was assigned to implement Agreement on Educational and Cultural Matters between the British Trade and Cultural office in Taipei and the Taipei Representative Office in the United Kingdom.
2002
The British Council signed the Memorandum of Understanding for Scientific Cooperation with the National Science Council Taipei to collaborate on bilateral academic links.
2003
The British Trade and Cultural Office signed the Amendments to the Agreement in 2001.
2004
The British Council opened its Educational and Cultural Centre for English teaching activities in Xin Yi District, Taipei.
The British Council signed the Memorandum of Understanding on collaboration in education and English language teaching with Department of Education, Taipei City Government.
2005
The British Council signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Collaboration in Education with the Cultural Division, Taipei Representative Office in the United Kingdom.
November 2011
The British Council renewed the Memorandum of Understanding on Collaboration in Education with the Cultural Division, Taipei Representative Office in the United Kingdom.
January 2013
The British Council renewed the Memorandum of Understanding on collaboration in Education with Department of Education, Taipei City Government.
July 2016
The British Council formed the British Council (Taiwan) Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the British Council to deliver paid English language courses as well as English language assessment services.
