One of the British Council's objectives is to develop a better and wider knowledge of the English language, so we are proud to be supporting the objective of Taiwan's 2030 Bilingual Policy to cultivate people's English proficiency. This will have a hugely positive impact on strengthening relations between Taiwanese people and billions of English speakers all over the world, enhance Taiwan’s international competitiveness, forge stronger business connections, strengthen Taiwan's protective alliances, and create more job opportunities for Taiwanese people at home and abroad.
Taiwan has already achieved a great deal in realising the objectives set out in the Bilingual Policy, and has a solid foundation on which to build. For example, more than 20% of students already graduate high school with upper intermediate or advanced levels of English proficiency, but there is still a lot to do.
With a view to supporting the development and delivery of effective English language education strategies, the British Council and British Office organised a series of seminars throughout 2021 to share some of the experience and expertise that UK education institutions have to offer in this area. The UK has extensive experience in designing, developing, and evaluating the learning of English. We have the widest range of specialist English language teaching courses in the world, providing English training for all ages and for specific areas of interest, and professions. And we offer not just English courses, but also the training of teachers, curriculum development, and the design and delivery of English language assessment.
